Bell at Assumption College

Bell and Assumption College Bangkok formed it's successful partnership in 2005. Today, about 300 Mathayom 1 to Mathayom 3 students are learning English with Bell at Assumption College.

History of Bell

Frank Bell, OBE set up the first Bell school in Cambridge, England in 1955.

Frank’s inspiration came from his time as a prisoner of war during the Second World War. In the harsh conditions of the camp, he taught his fellow prisoners Spanish and French, a simple act of defiance that quickly led to the creation of a ‘secret university’, which taught a broad range of subjects.

After the war, Frank Bell returned to England. Reflecting on his experiences, he realised that the route to international co-operation and understanding lay in learning. This led him to open his first language school in Cambridge, which still operates today as Bell Cambridge.

Since then, Bell has grown from one prestigious English language school in Cambridge to an internationally recognised, high-quality education business with five other UK centres, international hubs in Switzerland and China, and many partner schools across the world.

The Bell Way

The Bell Programme at Assumption teaches students using communicative methodolgies to develop learners' speaking, writing, reading, and listening in accordance with The Bell Way, an approach to education which involves:

Organsational Learning: helping learners to develop lifelong study skills

Clarity of Learning: ensuring that learners know clearly what they're learning, why they're learning it, and how it can help them in the future

Assessment as Learning: giving learners constant, consistent feedback so that they always know how to improve

High Expectations: understanding what our learners are truly capable of and always pushing them to do their best

Learn Everywhere: encouraging our learners to take their English language studies outside of the classroom and explore the world with English

Unique Individual: understanding that all of our learners are different people and taking a personalised approach to each student which suits their abilities and interests

Why study with Bell?

Curriculum based on international standards

The Bell curriculum is based on the Common European Framework of Reference, the gold standard for language proficiency internationally. This framework focuses on what students can do in the language they are learning, such as:

  • describe their dreams, goals, and aspirations
  • describe plans, arrangements, habits, routines, past activities and personal experiences
  • give prepared presentations on familiar topics
  • write about their experiences, feelings, or reactions in a simple, connected text
  • read straightforward, factual texts on topics familiar or interesting topics

Quality Teaching - Guaranteed

External programme assessors from Bell English, an award-winning language school in the UK, come every year to assess the performance of the programme. Teachers are also formally observed twice a year and must participate in active professional development programmes to ensure they are providing the best instruction possible.

Teachers

Bell teachers are all qualified, experienced teachers with international teaching qualifications. This ensures that Bell teachers have excellent subject knowledge and can provide the highest level of education for our students.

Resources

Bell students receive a level appropriate set of internationally-sourced course books each year. As well as the Student Book and Workbook, each student is also given a student folder and a portfolio folder to keep their Bell work in. Bell teachers are also trained in using educational technology effectively to help engage learners and maximise their progress.

Class Sizes

Bell classes are restricted to a maximum of 16 students. This allows the teacher to devote individual attention to each and every student and allows all students to fully participate in the lesson.

Narawit Asavaruengpipob and Alexander Bumpenpon

On November 22nd, 2023, Toto and Alex competed in English competitons held by the Bell Programme at Assumption College, Thonburi. They competed in the "London Twang" event, an event designed to award students for their proficiency in the London accent

Alex took 3rd place in the competition, and while Toto unfortunately did not place, he recieved extremely positive remarks from the judges who were impressed with his performance.

As part of the competition, the students were required to guess the meaning of London slang phrases, imitate the London accent, and in the final event produce a small performance with another contestant where they needed to display their use of the London accent. Both Toto and Alex reported that they had an excellent time at the event and enjoyed it greatly.

Our Results

Student Progress by CEFR level, AY2023

Every year, our Mathayom 2 and 3 students take external, internationally-accredited exams from Cambridge Assessment English to measure their progress in English and give them international qualifications that they can take with them as they finish high school and go into university.

Our students consistently score highly on the exam, and we are an authorized Cambridge Preparation Centre, meaning that we have a proven track record of success preparing learners to succeed in these exams.

Exceptional Results

Students in our programme outperformed the Thai national average as well as the ASEAN regional average on the B1 Preliminary exam last year in both overall pass rate and rate of higher marks, including both Merit and Distinction. A programme-high 8% of our students achieved a Distinction, which means they’ve shown the level necessary to enter university (CEFR B2) a full 3 years early.

Outstanding Progress

In the Bell Programme, we take our students’ progress seriously and we track each of our students closely to ensure that they are meeting their English-language goals. Last year, our students improved at an average of one CEFR level per year in our programme, which is outstanding progress.
